 “The Lord was with …….”

(Note:  two weeks of teaching lessons. First week cover Gen-Rev.  Second week how God was with His people throughout history.)

Introduction

 Genesis Chapter 39

V.1  Joseph sold by Ishmaelites (Medianites) to Egyptian, Potiphar as slave.

V2.  Lord was with Joseph and he was prosperous.
                In charge of Potiphar’s house.

VS. 19-20  Joseph put into prison…..prosper.
                In charge of prison affairs.

Vs. 21 The Lord was with Joseph…mercy and favor.

Vs 23 The Lord was with Joseph…prosper

-Develop this theme throughout history.


The Bible is...

-History….the story of the universe and the human race.

-Redemption…how the God redeems human beings from sin.




Old Testament….”The Promise”

Genesis

Creation

The Fall 
(Curse on all of the earth and mankind)

The Promise (A redeemer)
Gen 3:15
Abraham  (The Covenant)
(Beginnings of the Nation of Israel)
This nation will bring to the earth the savior to end the curse.

Isaac-Jacob (Israel- Gen 32:28)
(12 sons become 12 tribes of Israel the nation)

Joseph
Sold into Egypt
Family comes to Egypt during famine.
Children of Israel-12 tribes-become slaves to Egyptians.
Stuck in Egypt

Exodus

Moses
-Children of Israel (Jacob) slaves.
-Moses leads them out of Egypt for Canaan.
-First generation wonders in desert for 40 years.

During the 40 years wondering…

Laws for worship of God and social interaction given for ritual and moral purity.
Tabernacle for sacrifices to God built.

Leviticus…Laws


Numbers
Two census, one to count first generation who will not enter promised land and one to count second generation, those who will enter the promised land.

Deuteronomy

Rules for entering the Promised Land.

Spiritual, civil, and moral laws given to generation that will enter the promised land.

Joshua

Conquest of the Promised Land, Canaan.
Sectioning off of the land to the 12 sons of Jacob (Children of Israel)

Judges

Israel in Promised land, fall into sin and Baal worship.
God punishes.
Judges save Israel from enemies.

I-II Samuel;  I-II Kings;   I-II Chronicles

At their request, Israel is ruled by earthly kings.
Rise of the nation of Israel under Kings.
Jerusalem main city, with a temple to the Lord.

United country under three kings….
Saul, David, Solomon

Following Solomon’s reign, country divided….

North Kingdom  (Israel) has 20 kings.
South Kingdom (Judah) has 20 kings.

Both were defeated by enemies and people taken into captivity.
Northern Kingdom (Israel) captured in 722 BC
Southern Kingdom (Judah) captured in 586 BC


Before the captivity of both Kingdoms, God, through His prophet’s, warned to return to Godliness or face defeat and captivity.

The Prophets were….

Hosea, Isaiah, Micah, Amos, Jonah, Nahum, Zephaniah, Habakkuk, Jeremiah, Daniel, Ezekiel, Obadiah

During Judah’s captivity, Haggai and Zechariah were prophets to the people.

Ezra and Nehemiah

Prophets during the return of the Children of Israel from captivity.
Ezra dealt with the spiritual grown of Israel after returning from captivity.
Nehemiah dealt with the building of the walls and the temple.

Malachi

Malachi was a prophet after the restoration of Judah.

Note:  After Malachi, there was approximately 400 year period when God did not speak formally to His people Israel.


Old Testament books of Wisdom and Praise

Psalms-Proverbs-Ecclesiastes-Song of Solomon

Praises to God and words of wisdom.


Esther

God’s provision to His people in time of need of protection.

Ruth

A great story of devotion, love. And redemption.

Job

Doubts, anguish, suffering, trials of life.
God’s people face each of these throughout life.


New Testament….”The Promise Fulfilled”

Mathew; Mark; Luke; John

The Gospels….Covenant is fulfilled
Christ is born, lived, died, buried, arose, ascended to heaven.
Disciples chosen and taught to carry the message to the world.

Acts to Jude

Spread of the Gospel unto Jews and Gentiles.
Spread of the Gospel to the then-known world.
Beginnings of the “Church”
Letters from disciples and apostles.

Revelation

A book of encouragement for the persecuted early church.
Tells of Christ’s return to earth and final victory over Satan.
Tells of the final judgment of mankind.
Tells of a glorious eternal future for those who love and serve Christ.

Between Jude and Revelation

The generations of Christians until Christ’s return.
The Early Church.
The Roman and Orthodox Churches.
The Reformation
Protestant denominational histories.

Back to “Lord was with….”

-History is the events of mankind’s journey on the earth.

-The Bible is the story of Jesus Christ….how God used events of history to carry out His redemptive plan for the salvation of mankind.

-“The Lord was with….”   Shows God’s hand in that eternal plan.
Adam and Eve

God walked and talked with them both. (Gen 3:8)                      (God was with them)
*The way God wished mankind to dwell on the earth.
They sinned and brought the curse of sin to the world.

Noah

“Noah walked with God”  (Gen 6:9)
“I will establish my covenant with you”. (Gen 6:18)
Noah and his family would not be destroyed.
*Noah will carry on the human race.
God will not destroy the earth with water again. (Rainbow)

Abraham

“Now the Lord said to Abraham….”(Gen 12:1)
 (Lord was with Abraham)
Go to a new land.
*I will make you a great nation.
All families of the earth will be blessed.
*Covenant (Promise)  established.

“And the Lord appeared to him…”  (Gen 18:1)
(“Lord was with….”)
*Lord told him he would have a son.


Ishmael
Son of Abraham, father of Ishmaelites/Midianites)

“So, God was with the lad” (Gen 21:20)
(or…”Lord was with……”)
*Ishmaelites  brought Joseph to Egypt to preserve His people

Joseph

Lord was with Joseph.  (Gen 39)
*Joseph into Egypt to become ruler, wisely conserved food.
Later family was nourished through a famine.
*Preserved the family line of Abraham.


Moses

Exodus 3:12 “He (God to Moses) said I will be with you…”
*Moses was God’s chosen leader to take Israel out of Egypt into the land promised to Abraham.
*Deut 3:16  Moses instructions to Joshua regarding Joshua’s leadership of Israel into the promised land.

Joshua

Josh 1:6 Lord your God is with you”
Josh 6:27 Lord was with Joshua”
*Joshua God’s chosen man to lead Israel into the Promised Land.

Judges

Judah:  (Judges 1:19)  “And the Lord was with Judah…”

Gideon: (Judges 6:12) “ Angel of the  Lord appeared to him and said ‘The Lord is with you’…”

*After Joshua died,   Judges to lead Israel into battle to save His people….these are the best know outside of Samson.

Samuel

“Lord was with him” (I Sam 3:19)
*A respected priest to God’s people between Judges and Kings.
*God used him to anoint His chosen first king of Israel.


Three Kings under a Unified Israel Nation

(Saul)

David

I Sam 16:18 “Lord was with him”
* God loved David
*First earthly King of Israel.
*From his lineage Christ would come.

Phinehas

I Chronicles 9:20 “Lord was with him.”
Phinehas was the leader of the Korahites, Gatekeepers of the Tabernacle
*After Saul, David reestablished civil and religious law

Solomon

II Chron 1:1, “The Lord was with Solomon”
*God’s king to solidify nation of Israel.
*God’s king to build first permanent place of worship…temple.

Kings under a divided Israel (Not too many good ones)

  Kingdom of Israel  and  Kingdom of Judah

  • Called good kings of Judah because they reestablished preeminence of God for their kingdoms.

Asa

II Chron 15: 2 “…The Lord is with you…”

Hezekiah

II Kings 18:7 “and the Lord was with him”.

Johoshaphat

II Chron. 17:3  “And the Lord was with Johoshaphat because he walked in the ways of his father David”

Ezra

Ezra 7:28 “The hand of the Lord was upon me”
*A priest that reestablished God’s laws and rebuilt the Temple after the return of Israel from captivity.

Nehemiah
Nehemiah 7:5  “Then my God put into my heart…”
*After the return from captivity, Nehemiah was a builder of the walls of Jerusalem.

*God’s prophets warning Israel of their sin and its consequences.

Jeremiah  

Jeremiah 1:8  “Do not be afraid of them, for I am with you to deliver you, declares the Lord “

Ezekiel

Ezekiel 2:6  “Be not afraid of them…” (Implied: for I am with you)


Daniel

Daniel 1:9  “Now God brought Daniel into favor…..”
Daniel 1:17 “God gave them knowledge, skill in learning,… “



John the Baptist

Luke 1:66 “hand of the Lord was with him”

Christ
To His People….

Isaiah 7:14, & Matt 1:23  ‘Immanuel’…God with us.

Matt 28:20 Christ said “I will never leave you or forsake you”.

Early Evangelists

Matt 28:20  “I will never leave you or forsake you”  (Christ to Disciples)

John 8:29   (Christ) “And he who sent me is with me. He has not left me alone…..” (God was with Christ as a man)

Acts 1:8  “But you will receive the power of the Holy Spirit….”
(Christ to Desciples)

Acts 11:21   (Disciples) “And the hand of the Lord was upon them and a great many believed turned to the Lord”

Acts 18:9 & 10  (Paul) “And the Lord said to Paul one night in a vision Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent, for I am with you and no one will attach you to harm you.”

Hebrews 13:5.6 (To early church members) “Keep your life free from love of money, and be content with what you have, for he has said I will never leave you nor forsake you.  So we can confidently say ‘The Lord is my helper, I will not fear; what can man do to me?”

Conclusion:

-Throughout history, God has raised up and stood beside men and women who He needed to carry out His will.

-As we see from the New Testament, God has given us, His church, His revelation (The Bible) of these things so …..

1-We can see Him working His plan of salvation throughout  history.

2-Be comforted to know that God is with us in all things today, as in the past, working out our salvation.
